Flipboard’s missing ‘Love’ Folder Aug 17
words • Send to Instapaper

When I tweeted the idea of having a ‘Love’ folder on Flipboard, the CEO, @mmccue shouted: “…cool idea. Thanks! Stay tuned :-)”.

The cute smiley face was real, and I appreciate his love for it, but there’s no actual timeline when or how they will implement it.

When you favourite an item, Flipboard tags it to the corresponding account, a tweet will go to your favourite tweets, a like goes to facebook, and a star would go to your Google Reader’s starred items correspondingly. If you’re like me, who also tags interesting stuffs for future reference (a read later but for everything else) from other apps & sources, I’d like to have a placeholder for it in my Flipboard.

Kottke answers to this need by creating Stellar, but it has not gone public yet, and there’s not much app supporting it at this point of time. This simple hack is a shortcut, a temporary solution that works across apps, a centralised, self-collected items that aggregates to a simple RSS feeds.

1. Collect the RSS feeds.

First, you need a Google Reader and a delicious (or pinboard) accounts, the latter is a placeholder to tag items/links from apps, like that of Zite, Editions, etc. Though not documented, Twitter has the ability to generate an RSS feed of your favourites, and obviously, you can also do the same with other social accounts:

Google Reader: Go to Settings > Folders & Tags, click the greyed RSS icon, and copy the link from ‘view public page’

Twitter: http://twitter.com/favorites/[your user name].rss

Flickr: Open http://www.flickr.com/photos/[your user name]/favorites/, the subscribe link is at the bottom of the page.

YouTube: http://gdata.youtube.com/feeds/api/users/[your user name]/favorites?orderby=updated

Vimeo: http://vimeo.com/[your user name]/likes

2. Populate

Create a new folder in Google Reader where you would like these items to be collected, I called mine Love, and add the feeds to this folder.

3. Awesomeoness

I deleted my ‘Your Starred Items’ page in Flipboard and replace it with the ‘Love Folder’, and behold, every single loved items are there, chronologically, at your fingertips.
